General _
Under a recent act of Congress creating the office of Ensign, I have the honor to apply for that position.
At the time I was appointed Color Sergeant, the former Color Sergeant and a majority of the Color Guard had been killed. I was the only Sergeant (so informed [?] by the Commanding Officer of the Regiment at the time) who would volunteer to take the colors. I then received them without rank or additional pay. I now respectfully ask that I may be allowed to retain them. I had the honor to bear them as a Private in the first engagement in which the Regiment ever[?] participated and would ask no higher honor than to be permitted to bear them through the last.
I am General, Very Respectfully, Your Obt. Servt.,
Dennis L. Ryan, Sergeant, Co. B,
Color Sergeant, 3rd Regt Geo. Vol.,
Wright's Brigade
