Re: Equipment of Battle's Brigade during Early's V

Here (Staunton) Early stopped, and with good reason. Half of his infantry and many of his officers were without shoes. The weather did not affect their feet, but experience had taught them that Northern roads were most unkind to unshod troops. The impatient General called on Richmond to send shoes to Staunton’ but they did not arrive. Undismayed, Early set out with his barefoot men, leaving wagons behind to bring up the needed footgear.

In the morning the Confederate cavalry was sent off in the direction of Frederick, Maryland, and that night, the long-awaited shoes arrived. At last the Confederates could march in relative comfort. (ibid , p. 7)

A gentleman who left General Early’’s command on Thursday last makes a glowing report of the condition of the troops; says that they are in fine health and the best spirits. The horses, which were somewhat fagged by the long and continued marches, were replenished in Maryland. The soldiers procured clothing and shoes in the same State, and are getting an abundance of good food in their present quarters. (Richmond Dispatch, 8/18)
