Re: Shanty Hill Cemetery - Greene Cty., AL

Alan, the last I saw of the Poyner house several years (decades) ago was advanced disrepair. I too doubt whether it still stands.

This was the home of Capt. Digges Poyner, faculty member at the Alabama State University (UofA) in Tuscaloosa, a graduate of Virginia Military Institute under the instruction of Major Thomas J. "Tom Fool" Jackson. Captain Poyner accompanied the cadet battalion on the morning of April 4, 1865, on the streets of the Druid City to oppose the bridgehead of Croxton's First Brigade of cavalry. Capt. Poyner's daughter, also an educator, was an elderly resident of Pleasant Ridge, Greene County, during my childhood, as was the octogenerian parrot Capt Poyner obtained in Mobile.
