He was absent, sick, during much of his military career, which began on May 10, 1862, Gadsden AL. After being captured at Mossy Creek, he was sent to prison at Rock Island IL. After several months at Rock Island, he enlisted in Co E, 3rd U S Volunteers. He was discharged after a one-year term. Fort Leavenworth KS, Nov 29, 1865.
