I have learned that the Civil War Preservation Trust has worked with the major landowner to procure a conservation easement on 147 acres of the Champion Hill battlefield. This should protect it from development. However, the Champion family retains ownership of the land.The Trust also owns a 55 acre parcel plus 823 acres was saved by The Conservation Fund (both now being managed by Mississippi Dept. of Archives and History). Although I am pleased that portions of the battlefield are being protected, I am still disturbed that there isn't more public access. I would suggest anyone that wants to visit the Champion Hill battlefield first contact the landowners for access.
