Hi Hugh, Thank you for your extremely thorough response to my inquiry!!! I truly appreciate it. In answer to your question, in 1860 Benjamin F. Trousdale was living in Lawrence Co. with his inlaws, Levi and Nancy Carter, along with his wife, Sarah "Sallie" (Carter) Trousdale and 4-month old daughter, Nannie Bell Trousdale. His own parents and family still lived in Lauderdale Co. AL. And, because Lawrence Co. borders Lauderdale Co, perhaps that is why he went back to Lauderdale Co. to enlist. Family oral history from Nannie Bell (Trousdale) Letsinger indicates that at some point during the Civil War, Trousdale went AWOL and came home to AL because his wife was ill, which may explain why he does not appear on the muster rolls. Apparently the 35th AL did not consider him a deserter, and they took him back into the regiment. He applied for a pension when 73 years old, claiming disability, but was denied because the AL regulations for pensions said he had to be over 80 years old. After his death, his widow, "Sallie" Trousdale applied once again. Thanks again for your help. It's always interesting to learn more details!
