James K. Seward, Co. H 49th AL LETTERS

Recently found two letters written by Sgt. James K.Seward, Co. H 49th AL. His letters were part of the George S. Lea, Co. C 7th Miss. collection at Carlisle Barracks. Though part of the collection, they were not transcribed with the other letters. I doubt that anyone has seen these letters in the past 10 years since we just found the collection which had been in storage since 1995 at Carlisle.

The first was from Cahaba, AL, May 8, 1864. His regiment had been exhanged and was awaiting orders. He was part of Loring's Division, Scott's Brigade and would soon join the Army of Tennessee at Resaca.

The second letter was written "in the woods near Atlanter, Ga." in July 18, 1864. He mentions being wounded on June 18th in the left hand, but he was still with his command. This action was most likely at Kennesaw Mountain. He also describes what he calls "monkey business" in the army..."hood had git Comand of this armey"

I'm looking for descendants or others interested in Seward and the 49th Alabama. Haven't had time to check his records yet.
