Trinity Cave Nitre Works

While doing the biographies of the dead at Camp Chase I ran across one man who had worked as an employee at the Trinity Cave Nitre Works in Morgan County, Alabama. Marion O. Smith wrote a wonderful article which can be read online for the The National Speleological Society an organization formed in 1941 to advance the exploration, conservation, study, and understanding of caves in the United States. The article was devoted only to the Civil War era concerning Trinity Cave and listed many men who had been employees for the Confederacy who had been laborers at the Trinity Cave. According to the article about 50% of the 70 plus employees had been residents of Morgan and Lawrence counties in Alabama and the Nitre Works was located about 5 miles west of Decatur, Alabama near Trinity Mountain and a few of the men left their names on the cave walls which can be saw to this day.
