Thanks for the helpful information! A description of the Watson Family Papers mentions that (Elihu) Wesley Watson graduated from South Carolina College in 1858. Also noted is that his body servant (slave), Richmond, was captured during an attack by Federal cavalry on the retreating wagon train at South Mountain (aka Monterrey Pass, the night of 4/5 July). It is separately reported that seven black teamsters in O'Neal's brigade were captured at that time, along with the slave belonging to the brigade's Chief Quartermaster, Major James C. Bryan. Incidentally, Watson's CSR appears to indicate that he was Sergeant Major of the regiment at the time of the campaign - is that so?
