Appreciate the info. It's from a letter that was reprinted in a newspaper article. The person in question committed a pair of murders in Quebec after supposedly returning from serving in the Federal army. In another article it is stated that he in fact had boasted about jumping his bounty and had engaged in the crimping business. If true about the bounty jumping, this would place his "service" 1864/65. I have seen reference to 9th Alabama losing its flag at Petersburg. But whatever led him to mention 35th New York vs. 9th Alabama at Antietam? The article/letter is reprinted from another paper, Montreal Witness; unfortunately, the local university only has microfilm of the Montreal paper starting 1870, I believe. I'm trying to find another paper where this letter is reprinted.

Top of second page, middle column:

The Last Hope of Barreau.
