FYI: Col John B. Turchin (Ivan B. Turchinenoff) was Russian by birth and became a student at the military school in St Petersburg. He was made a Lieutenant in the Russian and was promoted to Captain. Being a member of the état-major, or staff, he was sent back for three more years of military schooling. He graduated with honors and at the opening of the Crimean War, was made first assistant to the engineer of the Grand Duke, afterward, Emperor Alexander. He was stationed in Finland, and Germany and came to the United States where he was an engineer with the Illinois Central Railroad at the outbreak of the War of Rebellion. He became Colonel of the 19th Regiment of Illinois Infantry on Jun 22, 1861. He was a Brigade Commander and appointed BG on Jul 17, 1862.
It seems he was another "Political General" with an impressive background but with little integrity.
