If a soldier was paroled from a Federal prison, he would have agreed not to take up arms until formally exchanged. If he was delivered to Confederate authorities, he would have been forwarded back to his unit to remain in exchange camp until exchanged, at which time he was free to take up arms again. If unfit for duty at the time of exchange he would have been admitted to a hospital, most likely in the Richmond/Petersburg area until discharged or on recovery, returned to his unit’s parole camp.
