Pvt. Francis M. Shields, Co. A, 46th Ala. Inf.

There is a grave marker at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Vicksburg, Mississippi for a Private F. M. Shields of Company A, 40th Ala. Inf. Regt. who supposedly died 12 June 1863. The problem is that I can find no such soldier listed with the 40th. There is only one other soldier by the name of Shields that I find with this regiment, a John P. Shields of Company F who did survive the Siege of Vicksburg and later transferred to the Confederate navy. Obviously, this is not him. I have already discovered a mistake on another grave marker in this cemetery. I have discovered that there was a Pvt. Francis M. Shields of Co. A, 46th Ala. Inf. This regiment was at Vicksburg during that time period. Would someone please that has access to the records for the 46th Ala. look to see if Francis M. Shields died at Vicksburg or has no records on file after June 1863? I would appreciate it. This would be compelling evidence that this grave marker is also incorrect as to the regiment indicated. Thanks, Henry Seale
