Re: Soldiers Returning Home after Signing Oath of

Relative's name was John Washington Reaves, Wilcox County, Alabama, member of 13th Alabama Infantry, captured at Gettysburg first day. Sent first to Fort Delaware and then transferred to Point Lookout in October 1863. He was released from Point Lookout in Feb 1865. I do have notes that say he was "exchanged in a prisoner swap" but also was told it was more likely he was released after taking oath of allegiance when they started releasing prisoners in early 1865. Notes from Bartlett Yancey Malone's diary say they started "calling out" men in various groups in Feb 1865, including the group captured at Gettysburg on 17-18 Feb. I also have information that he was very ill when released.

When I talked to the historian from Point Lookout he said they would have been put on a boat and taken probably to Richmond once they were released.

Any specific details you have on him and his release would be appreciated. You have helped me before with other relatives so I appreciate the help.
