Re: Capture of Yankee Recruiting Officers

Hello Holt, Sometimes newspapers are not the most reliable source for information but in this case there is truth.

Federal POW Records located at ancestry (34503) stated that W.F. Corbin was charged with being a spy and recruiting behind Federal lines and was executed at Sandusky, Ohio on May 15, 1863 and that his body was sent to his friends.

That is why I could not find him at the Johnson's Island Cemetery.

Upon further looking his full name was William Francis Corbin and the execution was a result of General Burnsides order number 38. Also executed was Thomas Jefferson McGraw.

Using google enter "Executions at Johnson's Island" and go to the second site www.executedtoday.com/tag/johnsons-island

There you will see a detailed account of their stories including eyewitness accounts and the last words of W.F. Corbin before their execution. I will wait for those interested in the account and not ruin it by elaborating further.
