The Alabama in the Civil War Message Board

THANKS TO ALL AND PATRICK RAY UPDATE

Thanks to Rick Bryant and Alan Pitts, I THINK, thanks to their information, I've discovered the mystery of why my ggrandfather is not listed in the 8th Alabama muster, but is listed in the book in the Mobile Library called "Mobile Companies in the Civil War." I checked that list of names, against the 8th Alabama and the 10th Virginia Cavalry, and discovered that three of the men, including my Patrick, mustered into the 10th Virginia on June 9, 1861, the day after the 8th Alabama was officially mustered into the Army of Virginia. They must have been buddies, and as Rick pointed out in his posting of Sept. 4th, the men of the 8th were disgruntled when they reached Richmond. My great grand mother's account did not say he"fought" with the 8th Alabama, but that he "LEFT Mobile in 1861 with the 8th Alabama, Mobile Independent Scouts." Had Rick not found Patrick in the 10th and connected him to my Patrick, I would never have made that leap. The three volunteers from Mobile were: George Kassell (Kessell); James Gardner; and Benjamin Roberts.

I received so much valuable information from Alan Pitts and Rick Bryant, along with Arthur Green of Mobile who referred me to the board. I did send a contribution to Jim Martin the
web-master in honor of PATRICK RAY and with thanks and recognition to ALAN, RICK, AND
ARTHUR.
