Thank you, Mr. Allardice, for your history knowledge. Since making the original post, I have been studying the situation in its entirety, and must admit that, like your note concerning the Crimean War, it was much worse than I imagined. Perhaps the best summing up of the Civil War period and gas is the following from:
U.S. Army Soldier and Biological Chemical Command (Even though they got Leroy Pope Walker's (AL Native that started his political career in Lawrence County, AL) name incorrect.

In short, bad as the war was, it could apparently have been many degrees of Hell worse.
