Since making the original post, I have been studying the situation in its entirety, and must admit that, like your note concerning the Crimean War, it was much worse than I imagined. Perhaps the best summing up of the Civil War period and gas is the following from:
U.S. Army Soldier and Biological Chemical Command (Even though they got Leroy Pope Walker's (AL Native that started his political career in Lawrence County, AL) name incorrect.
