The Alabama 23rd Infantry Regiment was organized at Montgomery, Alabama, in November, 1861. It moved to Mobile and during the next two months lost 82 men by disease.

Infantry regiments were typically composed of about 1,000 men. A loss of 82 by disease represents about 8%, a sizeable number. Disease represented almost 2/3's of all deaths during the war. Men were dying from "camp diseases" relatively soon after enlisting.
