Did they miss one of the great moments of the war when Early reached Fort Stevens July 11, within five miles of the Capitol Dome, Washington, D. C., before Grant's re-inforcments arrived to stop his advance on the city?

Earlier, Early had been held up by Lew Wallace for about 24 hours at Monacacy. For this it was said, "Early was Late."

The London Times in commenting on Jubal Early’s Maryland invasion: “The Confederacy is more formidable as an enemy than ever.” [Jubal’s Raid, General Early’s Famous Attack on Washington in 1864, Frank E. Vandiver, University of Nebraska Press, 1960, 1988]
