Re: 5th Alabama Infantry Regiment - Fort Stevens

July 12, 1864

During the early part of the action, Lincoln had gone up on the parapet and was looking over the top among the twittering and whirring of the minie balls when a young captain named Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., yelled at him, “Get down, you damn fool.” Lincoln complied and sat with his back to the parapet, safe, but still able to hear the bullets murmuring overhead.

Shucks, had not Capt. Holmes acted, my great granddad with the 43rd Tennessee, might have brought Old Abe down!!
