Letters from Sergeant Joseph F. Barnett

Today at the Alabama Department of History and Archives I found some letters from Sergeant Joseph F. Barnett of Company I of the 17th Alabama Infantry written to Mary Allin Loffis. The fact is Mary had several letters from various soldiers.

From the private collections of the Alabama Department of History and Archives she has many letters from soldiers wishing to write her.

I shall only mention a sentence or two from Sergeant Joseph F. Barnett of Company I of the 17th Alabama in a letter to her.

"Miss Mollie, Ever since I saw you at Mt. Hilliard on the day of our company meeting my mind has been continually ruminating on the many accomplishments with which you might be proposed."

"I had my ambrotype taken & sent it home to my parents & sisters & brothers if I should never return they will never forget me."

The file had him listed as Joseph H. Barnett but after looking at fold 3 the ADHA now believes it might have been Joseph F. Barnett.

By mid 1863 the sergeant was dead according to fold 3.

Hopefully his ambrotype is still around somewhere.
