Virgil Cresap, then a resident of New Madrid, completed his obligated six months service with the Missouri State Guard, 1st Regiment Cavalry, was honorably discharged in December, 1861. I would assume he returned to his civilian occupation. There is no further indication of army service, until:

Two years later, on February 1,1864 he enlisted in the Confederate army at Monterery, Tenn. Enlisting at this time could indicate that he had reached conscription age which that month had been extended to those in the 45 to 50 year age group.
