Appling’s Company, Alabama Reserves,* enlisted August 4, 1864 at Abbeville, Henry Co., Ala., by Major Hunt for the war, receipted for an issue of clothing August 13, 1864, died, date unknown, effects turned over to Quartermasters Dept. $27.00,** 1865, description on enlistment: age 47, dark hair, dark complexion, grey eyes, resident of Fairfield Co., S. Carolina

* This company subsequently became Captain Appling’s Company I, 3rd Battalion Alabama Reserves containing men of age 45-50

**Based on a Private’s rate of pay of $11 a month, I believe his date of death could have been about October 18, 1864
