Here are some other accounts:

Mobile Daily Advertiser and Register, April 21, 1864

"Perdido," Co. B, 7th Alabama Cavalry, Camp Powell, Baldwin Co., April 14

"Affair at or near Gonzalia, about the 2nd or 3rd of this month, under Maj. F.C. Randolph, of the 7th Alabama cavalry, with a very small detachment of the three companies stationed at Gonzalia… They were attacked, or at least surprised, a short distance from the Navy Yard, by a superior force of the enemy's cavalry. The surprise was owing to the negligence of the rear guard. Major R. fought the enemy for some time, and in some instances it was a hand to hand encounter. Finally overpowered by superior numbers, and thinking the web-feet (infantry) were coming up, he acted the better part of valor by retreating in good order, and none too late, as the infantry were indeed coming up, when they met their outdone brethren, foiled by the indomitable courage of Major R. and his little band… Who would wish for a more effective weapon than an army repeater? We have none at all; we have nothing but the refuse of a lot of Austrian rifles. Our armament has been neglected through some cause or other, but nevertheless the Austrian rifle is just as effective in our hands as any others, although we would prefer a gun more suitable for cavalry use… The Yankees… had very superior guns to ours."

"Skirmish in Florida," Montgomery Advertiser, April 8, Montgomery Weekly Advertiser, April 13, 1864

"A small party from Col. Hodgson's 7th Ala. Cavalry, under command of Major F.C. Randolph, was attacked on April 2d near the Navy Yard by a superior force of the enemy's cavalry. In consequence of the negligence of the rear guard the enemy was upon Major Randolph before his party could wheel and form into line; such of them, however, as formed, poured a volley into the Yankees, which killed the commanding officer and emptied a number of saddles, as was evidenced by the riderless horses which dashed up. The contest was then hand to hand, several men on both sides being wounded with sabres. Major Randolph, Lieut. Golsan and others acted with much gallantry. The Major remained on the field until all of his men had withdrawn, and then rode off under the fire of the enemy's pistols, after discharging every barrel of his own. Lieut. Golsan is said to have shot one of the enemy and then beat him over the head with his empty pistol, while the Yankee was cutting at him with his sabre. The Lieutenant caught the sabre blows on his gauntleted hand and then galloped off as a party came to the assistance of the dying Yankee. The gauntlet was cut through in several places, but the Lieutenant was unhurt.

After collecting his men the Major returned to the field and saw the signs of several ambulances which the enemy had brought out from the Navy Yard in order to remove his dead and wounded. Our loss was one killed, three wounded and twelve captured. As Col. Hodgson's regiment is a new one, this was the first time any portion of it had been under fire. The conduct of officers and men promise well for the future."
