A good example of this elite manuver battalion concept, I believe, is the Palmetto South Carolina Sharpshooters Regiment of the Army of North Virginia. It was organized from 3 other SC regiments as a "super" or overstrenght regiment of 12 companies during the reorganization of April of 1862.

During the Battles of Seven Pines/Fair Oaks and the Seven Days Battle it in conjunction with the 5th South Carolina Infantry acted almost as an independant mini brigade under the command of Col. Micah Jenkins, flanking and manuvering around several Union fixed fortifications and in general disrupting the Union battlelines in both battles. Pretty impressive deeds for such a small force. At the Battle of Gaines Mills (Seven Days) they suffered 70% casualities. But throughtout the war they were used for special service or given unusual assignments such as forcing an amphibious crossing of the Tennessee River at Knoxville, Tn.

In fact this may have been the concept for the organization of other Sharpshooters regiments throughout the Confederate army.
