Re: Stirman's Sharpshooters
In Response To: Stirman's Sharpshooters ()

Bryan,

I am going through my materials tying to find some tidbits about Stirman's and/or Bridges' battalion of sharpshooters. A quick glance at the 3 volumes of "The Vicksburg Campaign" by Bearss reveals several references to Bridges, particularly as a component of Ferguson's "combat team". If you like, I will try and summarize those references.

Meanwhile; many years ago, I made several annual trips to the National Archives. I made tons of handwritten notes, and I'm now regretting that my incredibly poor hand writing is sometimes difficult to decipher-even for me.

Regardless, I have attempted to transcribe some of those notes as they may pertain to the Brooks/Stirman battalion of Arkansas cavalry. Reworking these entries into a chronological file will probably make them more instructive, if at all.

Note the August 1st order which indicates that Bridges' Battalion existed before it was merged with Stirman.

For what it may be worth, here goes:

From the National Archives:

On account of transfer of Hebert and the 3rd Louisiana regiment to Gen Maury, the Missouri troops of 1st brigade will report to Gen Green, and Arkansas troops to Col Cravens, and division organization will then be:
