Thanks, Bod, that answered my question. If there was a Douglas Plantation prior to 1860 then that is most likely the source the reference to "Fort" Douglas. I am pretty sure that since this "fort" was made of basically mud due to the freezing weather, sleet, and snow, it would seem that it would be logical to see why the Texas soldiers of Walker's Texans may have referred to this site in "Journey to Pleasent Hill" as "Camp Freeze Out."

"Was the lower Pine Bluff to Arkansas Post Road north or south of the river?"

As an odd coincidents there were roads from Pine Bluff to Arkansas Post on both side, north and south of the Arkansas River. That is why I referred to the road in question as the Lower (south) Pine Bluff to Arkansas Post road.

The lower road roughly ran along the river as did the north road. But would every now and then vear away from the River. It crossed the Arkansas at South Bend Plantation where it forked going to Arkansas Post by picking up the North road. The south road continued on to Napolean, Arkansas.

Appearently at least part of Hawes Texas Cavalry Brigade crossed the Arkansas at Pine Bluff an used the north road to go to Arkansas Post.
