Colonel Yell was a member of the Confederate Army and lost his left eye in the Battle of Little Ridge in 1862. He married four times and died at the age of 86 run over by a tram in Oklahoma after a heavy drinking session. He is reputed to have had 5 wives. At school, he was regarded as a wastrel.
