Re: What was the strength of Fagan's brigades?

Bryce,
I am amazed there is so much information in the OR regarding the raid, and yet so little of it has been documented in other books. I am glad to help you with this.
Given the fact that the Confederates were so seriously outnumbered, without adequate arms,in enemy held territory, and that a large number of units were thrown together being populated mainly with deserters, conscripts and parollees, it is amazing what was accomplished.

As for the question I asked about the uniform of the 45th/McCray's Brigade. I located my field notes regarding the uniform, but I still did not find the folder that has the complete information and the source information.

The information I previously mentioned was an oral family history of Lt. C.H. (Charles) Penn.

According to the family history, few uniforms were available, so in order to establish a level of uniformity and company identification, it was established that each company would place a certain type of feather on a designated side of their hats (army today would state this as part of the Unit SOP -standard operation procedures).
I will continue to search for my missing folder to provide what information I have on that.
