Re: 3rd Arkansas Infantry in Mississippi?

John, thanks so much for posting that interesting memoir of Lorenzo Miears.

The account describes the journey of the "Fagan Rifles", a volunteer company organized in Union County, which became Co. C, 2nd Battalion Arkansas Infantry. The battalion was disbanded in July 1862, after being decimated in the fighting around Richmond in June. Lorenzo Miears and other survivors of the 2nd Arkansas Battalion were transferred to the 3rd Arkansas Infantry on July 18, 1862.

The names he mentions in his memoirs are --

Randolph Long -- is Capt. John Randolph Lacy.
Paul Covington -- is 1st Lieut. Paul R. Carrington.
Dr. Ponder -- is 2nd Lieut. Daniel T. Ponder.
Alford -- is Pvt. John H. Alford (killed in action at Mechanicsville, Virginia, on June 26, 1862).
Martin -- is Pvt. Augustus Martin.
Ed Anderson -- is Sergt. Albert A. Anderson.

The third lieutenant whose name he had forgotten was Lewis H. Sheppard.

One slight error in his memory of those events -- the company did not "go in as an artillery co." It was an infantry company, but several of its members were temporarily attached to Cooke's Virginia Battery in October 1861.

Once again, thanks for sharing that interesting and valuable information!
