The service records of U.S. volunteers are usually far more detailed than those of Confederate soldiers. His compiled service record should include personal data, such as age at enlistment, nativity, and a physical description; and military service information, such as his date and place of enlistment and muster into service, his status (present, absent on furlough, etc.) on each muster roll, a record of any wounds or illnesses incurred during his service, and a discharge certificate. In many cases, there is a list of the battles at which he was present.

U.S. pension records should include date of application and date of approval (or rejection), various affidavits certifying the service and current age, domicile, and physical condition of the veteran, the relationship of the applicant to a deceased veteran, brief summary of service with record of wounds, etc.

Most military researchers find the Compiled Service Record the most valuable document. Genealogical researchers seem to prefer the pension record, since that record includes more purely personal information.

You can order both by clicking on the link at the top of this webpage -- MUCH faster than going through the National Archives.
