Re: Battles of Helena and Jenkins Ferry

Having been a student of both of these battles for many years, I'm saddened to say that there is not a lot to see at either battlefield. The Helena battlefield has been taken over by the town. Battery C no longer exists although there is a marker describing the action at this position. Battery D, where most of the 35th Arkansas was engaged, still exists but is on private property.

The Jenkins Ferry site is marked by a small roadside park on Hwy 46 at the approximate position of the Federal pontoon bridge crossing of the Saline River. The main battlefield is about 1 to 1.5 miles southwest of the roadside park. It is on property owned by one of the large timber companies and has been clear cut so that it is not easily interpretable, nor readily accessible for that matter.
