Re: Aug. 19 Symposium at Old State House Musuem

Amy:

I certainly hope that Mexican-American war Major Solon BORLAND, later U S Senator Solon Borland, M D, (1811VA-1864TX) is recognized, among many other things, as aide-de-camp on the taking of Fort Smith 23 April 1861, raising what resulted as the 3rd Regiment Arkansas Cavalry, which fought in more skirmishes than did any other Arkansas unit during Civil War.

Copies of both documented booklets have been filed at Old State House Museum, as well as other like locations; "That Man Named Solon" and "Solon Borland & FAMILY", also available on-line is; <http://www.rootsweb.com/~arpulask/Solon.Borland.html>

Civil War memories should also include, Little Rock's own, his oldest daughter, Fannie Green Borland, poetess, who in Princeton, Ark at age 17, wrote "The Dead Confederacy" (signed copy on file at Special Collections, U of A), published by London Cosmopolitan (again in Daily Arkansas Gazette, 21 Jan 1872) after Rev Abram Ryan provided them a copy ---- also her endearing "At My Father's Feet": <http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/tn/shelby/newspapers/thedeadc2nw.txt> <http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/tn/shelby/newspapers/atmyfath3nw.txt>

Wish I could attend.
