Co. D, 1st Arkansas Infantry, was recruited in Jefferson County, which had a fairly sizeable number of descendents of early French settlers. Company D included men with old pre-statehood French surnames like Bogy, Dardenne, Dupree, Lemillieur, Malpass and Placie; also a number of Scottish immigrants and descendents -- in fact, the company was called the "Clan McGregor", in honor of its captain, Donelson McGregor [later promoted to lieutenant-colonel, mortally wounded at Murfreesboro].
