I love Collier's books, but they're not much use to research-oriented readers. One thing they've done, though, is to introduce "entry-level" Civil War enthusiasts to the role of Arkansas troops. I've gotten a lot of emails over the years from people wanting more details about the soldiers and battles they've read in Collier's books. So, in that context, I consider his books to be valuable additions to Civil War writing.

James Willis' Arkansas Confederates in the Western Theater is my idea of what a regimental/brigade history should be. Meticulously footnoted but with an easy-to-read, fluid writing style. Something for everyone.

Do you remember when Willis' book came out and was reviewed by the Arkansas Democrat? The reviewer complained that the book was "too detailed". I remember thinking, "That's right up my alley!"
