Re: 2nd ARK Cavalry Company I ???

It is a matter of records that at least 2 independant companies of Louisiana Cavalry (Nutt's and Denson's) served in Arkansas at Pine Bluff and Arkansas Post. Also that some members of the 28th Louisiana Infantry served as gunners at the battle of Arkansas Post.

Gen'l John S. Roane at Pine Bluff was sent to Monroe, Louisiana in June of 1862 to raise a Brigade to aid in the defence of Arkansas and Northern Louisiana from Union Gen'l Samuel Curtis. But Roane was recalled to Arkansas July 17th 1862, when the Confederate government created a district composed of northeast Louisiana and south Mississippi and placed Gen'l Van Dorn in command of it.

The question is just how effective was Gen'l Roane in raising that brigade? And what units was Gen'l Hindman referring to in his telegram? It is thought that Roane brough a detactment of 100 men from the 25th Texas Cavalry with him back to Pine Bluff from Monroe to be reunited with the 21st and 24th Texas Cavalry there at Pine Bluff, where they had moved to from Shrevesport, LA.. But did he bring any other units with him is not known.

The fact that the 13th Louisiana Cavalry Battalion was recruiting around Hamburg, Ark. in July 1862, And that the company of this Battalion that was recruited there was later transfered to the 2nd Arkansas Cavalry, as Company "I", makes an interesting sidelight to these above events.

It makes me wonder if there is a connection?
