Thomas Montague Gunter was a lieutenant-colonel in the 34th Arkansas Infantry when he was given command of a battalion of cavalry in December 1863. Gunter's Battalion is sometimes referred to as the 3rd Battalion Arkansas Cavalry, but I have been unable to locate an order from the State Military Board or the Confederate War Department which authorized this designation. The number is very much out of sequence (they were already up to the 16th Battalion by this time), so I suspect that it may have been a State Troops designation or, less likely, a reserve cavalry designation.
