Re: Units Recruited in Pope County
In Response To: Units Recruited in Pope County ()

Jim, the following Confederate companies were recruited primarily in Pope County --

1st (Stirman's) Battalion Arkansas Cavalry - Companies A-B-F-G.
2nd Arkansas Mounted Rifles - Company B.
3rd Arkansas Cavalry - 2nd Company E.
4th (Carroll's) Arkansas Cavalry - Company E.
7th (Hill's) Arkansas Cavalry - Companies A-H.
15th (Northwest) Arkansas Infantry - Company E.
15th Regiment Arkansas Militia - all companies.
17th (Lemoyne's) Arkansas Infantry - Company E.
21st (McCarver's) Arkansas Infantry - Company I.
31st Arkansas Infantry - Company E.
35th Arkansas Infantry - Companies H-I.
Williamson's Battalion Arkansas Infantry - Companies C-D-E.

In addition, I have reason to believe that at least one company of Adams' Arkansas Infantry (3rd Regiment, Northwest Division, Trans-Mississippi Army) was recruited in Pope County, but the regiment was disbanded after Prairie Grove, and almost no records of this regiment can be found.

The handful of Arkansas regiments raised for U.S. service were generally recruited "at large" from wherever they could find recuits. However, Co. I, 3rd Arkansas Cavalry, U.S. Volunteers, appears to have been largely recruited in Pope County.
