According to Capt. John O'Brien of the 30th(25th)Arkansas Infantry:
"A little before daylight he [Brig. Gen. Evander McNair]
sent to the brigade a barrel of whiskey. We all took a good drink of which we stood much inneed and voted McNair the best of genrls...."
This took place just before the Confederates assaulted the Union line at Murfreesboro on the morning of Dec. 31, 1862.
