Re: Pine Bluff
In Response To: Pine Bluff ()

Pine Bluff in the 1860 U.S. Census had a population of about 1,200 this ranked it fourth or fifth largest town in Arkansas during that census. However, it leaders were some of the leading proponents of Secession.

It was one of Governor H. M. Rector's 10 site of "induction?" set up to enlists men into the Confederate Army from July 1861 until September 15th, 1863.

Pine Bluff/White Sulphur Springs during 1862 was active in the defence of the lower Arkansas and White Rivers. And in 1863 the camps there played a part in the defence of Little Rock and the Vicksburg/Millekins' Bend Expedition of May and June 1863.

Pine Bluff was occupied by the Union Cavalry on September 15th, 1863 a few days after the fall of Little Rock.

It remained a Union base of operations under the command of Union Colonel Powell Clayton until the end of the hostilities.

A major engagement was fought at Pine Bluff on October 25th, 1863. In which the Confederate Forces withdrew after capturing the entire town except for the defences around the Jefferson County Courthouse.

Several Union expeditions into Southern Arkansas were launched from Pine Bluff during the remained of the war. However, Union forces by the end of the war were content to remain at Pine bluff and several Skirmishes were fought near Pine Bluff until the end of hostilities.

This is the short answer to your question. The Camp White Sulphur Springs Webpage only covers the efforts to conserve a small portion of the activities relating to the Pine Bluff-Sulphur Springs Hospital
