Ouch! I went back to my handwritten records, and it shows that Hughey's Battery was authorized in November 1862. In my ready-reference file on my computer, I typed it as 1863.
As a matter of interest, the battery was reorganized on June 8, 1863, and reinforced with a couple of dozen details from Monroe's Cavalry Regiment.
The only account I've ever read of Woodruff's "Bull Battery" is the one he wrote in With the Light Guns. I don't have reason to doubt the existence of the ad hoc battery he described, though. Woodruff doesn't seem the type to make false or exaggerated claims, but I could be wrong (often am).
