The man in the 1st Texas Battalion was a different T. J. Ashley.

Thomas J. Ashley, of Clark County, Arkansas, enlisted in Co. E, 12th Arkansas Infantry, at Arkadelphia, Arkansas, on July 20, 1861, for twelve months; age 26, born in Indiana. He died at Fort Thompson, New Madrid, Missouri, on April 22, 1862, due to scurvy.
