Thanks, guys! I am copying and saving all your replies and pasting them into my genealogy notes for future study. This is an interesting and fascinating research subject, and I appreciate your help.
Morgan was a private, detailed to the Bde Comm. Dept. When I first saw that, I thought Comm. was Communications Dept., then realized our Civil War soldiers had little in the way of communications. ;) Since Morgan held the rank of private, then we now know he was not the Quartermaster. Although I know so little about his life, other than he was a farmer, I can visualize him sorting through shipments of food and sending allotments to the troops, or repairing roads, or even participating in a cattle drive.
My next step is to order his full military records. Hopefully that will answer some of the questions.
