Charlene, after the Battle of Richmond (Kentucky), Pvt. B. F. Witcher, Co. E, 4th Battalion Arkansas Infantry, was detailed with other men to gather up discarded arms and equipment from the battlefield. Captured enemy equipment was always an important source of equipment for the Confederates. In the course of his duties, one of the muskets discharged, shattering his left arm, which the surgeon later amputated. The record doesn't state whether or not he or someone else was holding the gun when it went off.
This incident is mentioned in Anthony Hawkins' "Of Savage Fury: The Battle of Richmond, Kentucky." The book was privately published in 2004, so I don't know if it's available through online or retail outlets. I think Anthony reads this board, so maybe he'll see this and help you out. He put an unbelievable amount of research time into compiling the casualty lists, which are the most accurate and complete you'll ever find.
