I read his book on Wake Island before I became aware of his Civil War "proclivities." It was an exceptionally well-written piece of history, and I recall thinking that this young feller has a promising future. Then he went into his Civil War period, and, in my opinion, squandered his professional reputation with his obsession about race. As far as I am concerned, everything he writes about the Civil War is suspect. You may recall that he was the guy who pressured the State Parks Commission to change the battlefield marker at Poison Springs, in order to highlight the alleged racial aspect of the battle.
