General Earl Van Dorn was appointed as Commander of the Trans-Mississippi Department by President Jefferson Davis (a personal friend) in mid January 1862. Gen. Van Dorn arrived in Arkansas from Richmond, Virginia to assume this command about the first of February or about a month before the Battle of Pea Ridge Arkansas.

After Van Dorn was defeated at Pea Ridge he lead his Army of the West in a retreat all the way to Batesville and Pocahontas, where he recieved orders from A.S. Johnston to move his entire Army to Mississippi to consolidate for the Battle of Shiloh.

Van Dorn abandoned the State of Arkansas with his army and never returned to his Trans-Mississippi command West of the Mississippi River. I do not know when the 3rd Arkansas Cavalry was assigned as a part of Van Dorn's command.
