What I've seen is that Van Dorn was NOT thought highly of in Arkansas or elsewhere, even though he was ordered east of the Mississippi taking with him those troops Col Borland had enlisted from Arkansas, including what became 3rd Ark Cav. But then Gen Wm J Hardee did Arkansas or Borland no favors when he went east, see letter: <http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nc/hertford/letters/borland21.txt>
Gov Rector was having fits, what with Borland's Gen Order of 29 Nov 1861 stopping food stuffs from being exported from Arkansas, which was probably based upon what had happened in Missouri, but Solon fell ill and went home to Little Rock, absent 15 Dec '61 before Gov Rector's Proclamation of 20 Dec, '61 (AHQ,Vol XXXVII, 1978 "The Martial Law
...." by Huff) about Solon's Gen Order. However, there is billing of 5 Jun '62 for $250.00 ambulance service for Solon, also payment for over 1,700 miles of Solon's travel to Little Rock, Kentucky, Tennessee & Mississippi.

Little Rock Gazette's front page news story of 14 June 1862 stated; "...; his sickness has disabled him so far as to prevent his resuming his duties as a solider in the army for some time to come at least:..." leads me to believe he was home since Dec '61 and most likely did NOT return, even though the records use his name as if he were with the 3rd Ark Cav.

His son George died on way home from Gen Pike's troops 24 June, '62 and wife died 23 Oct, '62, he reportedly in bed sick at that time. The diary entry of 9 Oct 63 in Princeton, Dallas county, AR says he was in bed sick there, then he left for Harris county, TEXAS 13th Sept where according to his will written 31 Dec '63 had pneumonia, dying the next day. The entire Borland family, as a whole, were a sickly lot, including Solon's brothers, parents and their children.

Interesting in his record is ordr by Gen Hardee dated 3 Sept '61 for Borland and his regiment to go to Little Rock.

++++++++++++

Does anyone have listing of officers in Solon's group when he was placed in command of Upper Arkansas 5 Nov 1861? Was Benjamin Danley his Lt Col? Was Ben Danley related to C C Danley, Solon's close friend, and Mexican War buddy?
