Re: Elisha Baxter's switch to Union service

My ancestors were in Co. E. of Baxter's 4th. My ggreatuncle was Killed at Luenenburg, Izard County, only fatal casualty of the skirmish. His father applied for a pension and was turned down. My ggreatgranfather applied 3 times and was refused all three.
I have checked at random and those men I checked who mustered in at Batesville did not recieve any pensions that I could find. Some of those men that are on the Gerdes web-site that mustered in around Van Buren, did recieved pensions. Perhaps this Crawford county group is a different Union unit.
After Disbanding the 4th, some men went on to serve the Union at Devalls Bluff. These were the True Blue Unionist. My surviving ancestor came home to protect his family.
My ancestor and brother served the Confederacy for a year and a half, deserting after the fall of Vickburg. Unfortunately there isn't much family history that tells the story. I'm not sure how they ended up in Baxter's unit, but I bet it was a gun point.
It is my understanding that Baxter was a Slave holder. He felt war with the Union and the destruction it would bring to Arkansas wasn't worth keeping a couple of slaves. There was others in North Arkansas, who joined the union, that felt the same. Never the less, the war in northern Arkansas and southern Missouri is quite interesting.
I am always looking for more info on Baxter's 4th. I have a complete roster of Company A,C,D,and E of Baxter's 4th Arkansas Mounted Infantry, compiled by The late Nola James. Will do roster look ups, unless it becomes a problem.
