For those interested in an excellent examination of Taylor (and the rest of the Trans-Mississippi), I recommend "A Crisis in Command: Edmund Kirby Smith, Richard Taylor, and the Army of the Trans-Mississippi" by Jeffery S. Prushankin. As the title implies, it focuses mostly on the relationship between Smith and Taylor. The book provides some interesting insights into the clashes of style and differences of opinion between the two generals. It gives you a really good look into the personalities of the two men.
