I have a Partial History of the Descendants of James Oates (1660-1703) this tells that William C. Oates was with the 2nd Arkansas. So perhaps he was killed at Peachtree Creek or Atlanta. But then again perhaps he was discharged and re-enlisted in the 1st Battalion, because the family also spelled their name Oats.
